Overview

Follow the steps below to edit an existing template. Changes you make won't alter automations that are already using that template — they keep the version they were built with.

How to edit a template

  1. Go to the Templates page, click the three-dot menu on the template you want to edit, and select Edit template.

  2. In the email composer, make your changes. You can update the Name, Subject, Preview text, or switch to a different Brand Kit using Select another brand kit, in addition to editing the design itself. Every element you change here will be available when you select this template in a newsletter or automation.

  3. Once you're done, click Save and Exit in the top right of the screen.

That's it — you've edited a template with SmartrMail! 🎉

Tip: if you'd rather keep the original template untouched and start a variation instead, use Create copy from the three-dot menu instead of editing directly.

FAQs

Will editing a template affect automations that already use it?

No — automations already using a template keep the version they were built with. Only new automations or newsletters that select the template going forward will use your changes.

Can I rename a template while editing it?

Yes — update the Name field in the composer, the same field used when the template was first created.

Can I change a template's Brand Kit while editing it?

Yes — use Select another brand kit in the composer. There's no restriction on switching Brand Kits.
