Approximately $4 trillion worth of products were abandoned in online shopping carts in 2014 - it's one of the trickiest things to nail down but Abandoned Cart emails happen to be one of the more successful methods of reaching and converting these customers.
So we've put together a list of quick tips below to help get you started on the right path!
Tip #1 - Send all your emails within 24 hours.
72% of customers who buy from abandoned cart emails convert in the first 24 hours, so don't waste any time! For the following email series we recommend sending at these times:
For a 2 email series:
- Send at 1 hour and 24 hours after
For 3 email series
- Send at 1 hour, 4 hours, and 24 hours after
Bonus tip: don't include a discount in your first email! You want the first email to be helpful, not pushy - if you're immediately trying to close a sale, you risk irritating the customer.
Tip #2 - Design your series around pain points
Most customers who abandon carts do so for the following reasons:
- Unexpected shipping costs or conditions
- Browsing for a better price elsewhere
- Didn't want to create an account
Emailing customers with offers which address these problems can close these sales! For example, a follow up email after 24 hours offering free shipping on the product they viewed. If that doesn't convert, test a pricing discount.
Tip #3 - Use Urgency in your Emails
Mention to the customer that there's only a few items left in stock or that the discount will only last for a short time to get them moving along.
Tip #4 - Include a Survey
If none of that works, in your last email, try surveying customers on why they didn't complete their order so you'll know what to fix.
