If you want to get sales from your e-commerce email marketing, the best way to start is with an opted-in and engaged list.

At SmartrMail, we take deliverability seriously and therefore have strict list requirements that all users must agree to and follow.

In this article, you'll learn about our list requirements and why we must enforce them on all users.

List Requirements

Being an email service provider (ESP), we're obligated to enforce anti-spam laws on all our users. To do so, we've fully outlined all our requirements of our service in our Terms of Use.

The requirements below specifically refer to the use of lists :

Opted-in Subscribers

All subscribers on your email lists uploaded to SmartrMail must have opted in to receive emails from your store. Purchasing, selling, and transferring of lists is against CAN-SPAM law and our Terms of Use. If you're transferring subscribers from one store to another, they must have explicitly opted-in to emails from both stores.

Include your Address & Unsubscribe Link

We require you to include a valid physical postal address and unsubscribe link in the footer of all emails across SmartrMail. We automatically pull your address from our platform integrations, but if you'd like to use a different postal address, you can do so on the Design page.

Store Name as "From" Name

In the effort to fight spam and fraud, your "From" email name is set to your store name. We pull this from your e-commerce platform provider automatically.

Subject Lines

Funny is okay, but deceptive is not. Your subject lines must accurately reflect the content of your messages. Deceptive subject lines will result in lower open rates, are against the law, and we reserve the right to deactivate your account if you use them.

Best Practices for Lists

To keep your lists clean, we automatically remove hard bounced and unsubscribed emails from your lists. However, proper list management still takes a conscious effort on your part.

Re-engage or Remove Inactive Subscribers

Inactive subscribers aren't good for anyone. You might think we'd be happy for you to pay for them, but we can't stress enough how important it is to remove these addresses from your list. Inactive subscribers can sometimes turn into spam traps! Not only will this lower your deliverability, it may blacklist one of our IPs, which affects other users sending from that SmartrMail server.

No wonder we can't tell you to maintain an healthy list enough!

Maintain Permission

Haven't sent to your list in a while? While you may have permission to send to your old subscribers they've likely forgot who you are and will mark your email as spam. We recommend that, before uploading your list to SmartrMail, you reconfirm it outside the app.

Why We Have Strict Requirements

We just don't strictly enforce our terms and requirements because it's the law. Spam email can affect our IP addresses deliverability and other users that send from them.

We believe that the best way to grow our business is by creating the best email marketing experience for our valued users. Therefore, we go above and beyond to maintain their high deliverability by removing all (not so valued) users suspected of spam.
